Upper mantle structure under the Zagros collision zone; insights from 3D teleseismic P-wave tomography

چکیده
We map the lateral variations of P-wave velocity beneath Zagros collision zone in Iran down to 800 km depth by regional travel time tomography. invert 32,293 relative residuals from five temporary seismic networks across NW and central northern Iran, a large number permanent stations distributed over Iranian Plateau. A salient feature our model is ~225 thick lithosphere Zagros, almost twice as rest Iran. Slab detachment at range 250–300 base subducted continental Arabia clearly distinguishable Zagros. In appears be an earlier stage. Beneath Plateau, we observe shallow low-velocity regions 200 depth, smaller patches with significantly higher 200–400 range. This pattern might suggest post-collisional foundering mantle upper plate. The slab seems penetrate into lower segmented fashion, no evidence for stagnant above 660 interface.

Upper mantle Q and thermal structure beneath Tanzania, East Africa from teleseismic P wave spectra
[1] We measure P wave spectral amplitude ratios from deep-focus earthquakes recorded at broadband seismic stations of the Tanzania network to estimate regional variation of sublithospheric mantle attenuation beneath the Tanzania craton and the eastern branch of the East African Rift. One-dimensional profiles of QP adequately explain the systematic variation of P wave attenuation in the sublitho...
متن کاملUpper Mantle P-Wave Velocity Structure from Passcal Teleseismic Transects Across Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado
[1] Inversion of teleseismic P-time residuals along two linear seismic arrays provides well-resolved inverse images of the upper mantle. Low velocity bodies beneath the Yellowstone Hotspot Track and the Grand Mesa volcanic field in western Colorado are similar in shape and magnitude. In the two places where our transects cross the 1.78 Ga Archean-Proterozoic Cheyenne suture, high velocities are...
متن کاملGlobal variation of body‐wave attenuation in the upper mantle from teleseismic P wave and S wave spectra
[1] We constrain the spatial variation of P‐wave (tP*) and S‐wave (tS*) attenuation by inverting 190,000 teleseismic P‐ and S‐wave spectra up to 0.8 Hz. These spectra are derived from 250 deep earthquakes recorded at 880 broadband global and regional network stations. The variance and ratios of tP* and tS* values are consistent with PREM’s upper mantle velocity and Q structures and conventional...

متن کاملCalibration of 3d Upper Mantle Structure in Eurasia Using Regional and Teleseismic Full Waveform Seismic Data
We present progress in the development of a new approach to develop and evaluate earth models at the regional scale that utilizes full waveform seismograms. We have implemented an approach which relies on a cascade of increasingly accurate theoretical approximations for the computation of the seismic wavefield, with the goal to develop a model of regional structure for a subregion of Southeast ...
